Charitable Appeals and good causes supported

The Year of the Child

As this is designated the Year of the Child, our church has adopted one local and one overseas charity both connected with children to support and fundraise for this year. These are:

Wellchild 'For the Love of Bryony' Appeal

Bryony Aveyard was only 11 years old when she was struck down with a brain haemorrhage and died last year. Now her family are aiming to raise £55,000 this year to fund a WellChild nurse in the York area for a year, providing help for sick children and their families. Bryony used to attend our church, and Bryony's grandmother is one of our members, so an obvious candidate for our support.

Methodist Relief and Development Fund Project in Mali

With only 1,000 doctors and 600 midwives in a country of over 13 million people, 2 in every 10 children dies before their 5th birthday. Working with a local partner, MRDF trains local people in healthcare and midwifery skills and promotes health education.

If anyone has any ideas of fund raising events for either project or want to volunteer to co--ordinate an event can you please let either Neville or the stewards know your ideas / plans so that we can co-ordinate dates etc.

Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child

Each November we pack shoe boxes with gifts for distribution by the charity to children across Eastern and Central Europe, and Africa, in hospitals, orphanages, refugee camps, homeless shelters, and impoverished neighbourhoods.

Nigerian Health Care project

This is a project organised by the Wesley Guild nationally, to boost healthcare in Nigeria. Members have been saving and donating their 5p pieces to this for several years now. Full details on the Nigerian Health Care project website.

Other charities supported:

We make occasional donations to the following:

Church members are also involved in raising funds for Actionaid, the Candlelighters Trust and Tearfund, and some invest money in Shared Interest.

Many members are concerned about trade justice, and we have Traidcraft stalls at some of our coffee mornings, and have been holding a yearly fair trade fashion show of clothing from the Fairer World shop in Gillygate.
